Elegant longiloba cultivar with narrow arrow-shaped leaves and silver-white veins from Southeast Asia

Alocasia longiloba 'Silver' is an elegant cultivar from one of Southeast Asia's most fascinating and variable alocasias. The species is native to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, where it is highly variable in its leaf shape and color patterns. The form we offer here has particularly narrow, long leaves with white silver markings on the veins.

alocasia longiloba origin

Under ideal conditions, this species can grow impressively large, with leaves up to 60 centimeters long and 25 centimeters wide, and a total height of 1.2 to 1.5 meters.

The name "longiloba" refers to the species' characteristic long basal lobes that give the leaves their elegant arrow shape (resembling ears). In the wild, Alocasia longiloba grows in everything from rainforest floors to cliffs and ravines, and the species is so variable that botanists are still debating how many "forms" actually exist. They hybridize easily with each other, creating new variations, and the underside of the leaves can range from completely green to deep purple depending on the form.

Care

This alocasia prefers a coarse to very coarse, airy yet consistently moist substrate. In the wild, the plant grows in very nutrient-poor soil; in the rainforest, there is little to no humus. A thin layer of leaves and litter, only 1 to 3 centimeters thick, is usually followed directly by dense clay soil or rock. The plant's roots crawl along the surface under the thin leaf layer and rarely penetrate deeper than a few centimeters.

Therefore, plant in a loose, only slightly acidic (pH value around 5.5 to 6.5) and very airy mixture, preferably an aroid mix. Thrives in bright, indirect light with high humidity. Keep the substrate evenly moist but never soggy. Ideal temperature 18-26 degrees Celsius.

Fertilize monthly during the growing season. Buy Alocasia longiloba 'silver' online!
