Botanical description

Alocasia longiloba is a fascinating species from the rainforests and swamps of Southeast Asia, known for its extremely variable leaves. The species is actually the namesake of an entire "species complex" and is one of the species with the most synonyms; historically, many spectacular forms were described as separate species (such as lowii, watsoniana, denudata and veitchii), often for horticultural reasons during the 19th century. Today, these names primarily persist as cultivar names in trade.

The leaves can vary from entirely green to deep purple on the underside, which explains how the different purple cultivars originated. In nature, Alocasia longiloba grows in everything from the rainforest floor to cliffs and ravines, and the species is so variable that botanists still debate how many "forms" actually exist. They also hybridize easily with each other, creating new variations. The name "longiloba" refers to the species' characteristic long basal lobes that give the leaves their elegant arrow shape.

Unlike the narrower form 'Purple', which has narrow leaves with silver veins and a distinctly purple underside, 'Purple Vein' is characterized by broader leaf blades where the purple color itself is in the veins on the upper side of new leaves.

Care

Bright, indirect light; good lighting enhances the color of the purple veins and keeps the plant healthy. Grow lights are recommended during winter. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
