Robust and easy-to-grow Alocasia with glossy, bowl-shaped leaves, cultivated as a lucky plant in Asia

Alocasia cucullata is a classic and rewarding alocasia with glossy, heart-shaped leaves ending in a distinct point. The leaves are deep green and relatively thick, and the slight bowl shape that gave the species its name (cucullata means "hood-shaped") often causes the leaves to curve slightly inwards.

This is one of the more robust and easy-to-grow alocasias, with a compact growth habit and dense foliage that forms a full bush. It readily forms side shoots and small tubers at the base.

The species has an unclear natural distribution as it is only known from cultivation and from specimens growing around human settlements and in disturbed areas. It is cultivated in large parts of Asia, including China, India, Sri Lanka, and Burma, where it has long cultural-historical significance and is often planted at temples and homes as a lucky plant.

Care

Thrives in bright, indirect light but also tolerates partial shade. Water when the soil has dried slightly; avoid overwatering, which easily causes root rot.

Appreciates high humidity but is more tolerant of normal indoor air than many other alocasias, making it a good choice for beginners. Use well-draining, airy soil. Ideal temperature 18-26 degrees Celsius.

Fertilize monthly during the growing season. May go into partial dormancy during winter with reduced watering
