Exotic hanging plant with zebra-patterned leaves and tubular flowers

Aeschynanthus longicaulis (also known as Aeschynanthus marmoratus) has narrow, dark green, spear-shaped leaves with a lighter pattern on the top and a purplish, somewhat striped underside, making the leaves as ornamental as the flowers and giving it its "zebra"-like character. The leaves are relatively fleshy and smooth, somewhat like succulents.

During the flowering period, it develops elongated, tubular flowers in green and orange that protrude from the foliage. The flowers grow at the tip of a branch or at the base of a leaf and bloom singly or in pairs, green on the outside and dark red and yellow on the inside.

In nature, the species is an epiphyte that grows on large trees, on fallen tree trunks, or rarely on rocks in the humid jungle. Just like the genus Hoya, with which it is often confused, this climbing plant likes humidity and relatively low light. The species was first described in 1829 in Thailand by the botanist Nathaniel Wallich.
