Variegated tree houseleek with green-lime green rosettes and cream-yellow edges

Aeonium 'Florescens' is a fantastic succulent with rosettes of variegated leaves. Its origin is uncertain, possibly from Asia, but it appears to be a mutation of Aeonium haworthii which comes from the Canary Islands.

The plant readily produces side shoots and can grow up to 30 centimeters tall and wide. The leaves change color from green to lime green with cream-yellow outer edges. They can develop a reddish blush at the edges and a purple central stripe when exposed to strong sunlight. At the end of winter, the variegation of the leaves almost completely disappears, but after a few days of sunlight, the green and cream-yellow colors blend together again for a long time.

Care

Aeonium does not like hot or dry weather and can therefore go dormant during the summer, when they hardly need any water at all except in very dry conditions. In extreme heat, the leaves curl up to prevent water loss. Unlike many other succulents, their true growing season is winter to spring, when temperatures are cool (18-24 degrees Celsius) and humid.

Thrives in a bright location with some sun, which enhances the variegation and purple tones. During winter, water the soil when it has dried out; check by sticking your finger a couple of centimeters into the soil. Too much moisture or wet soil causes root rot.
