An aroid from Panama and Colombia with camouflaged leaves, extremely hardy and easy to care for

Adelonema wallisii (also known as Homalomena wallisii 'camouflage') is one of the most unique aroids. Instead of growing upwards, it spreads like a wide mat, only 15 cm high but over 50 cm wide.

The unusually hard, palm-sized, oval leaves display a fascinating tricolored pattern: almost white spots, a medium green base, and a very dark background color. New leaves unfurl light and develop their dramatic coloration over several weeks.

Botanical description

Adelonema wallisii comes from the rainforests along the Atlantic coast of Panama and Colombia, where it grows on the forest floor. It is often still sold under the old name Homalomena wallisii.

As a member of the aroid family (Araceae), it has characteristic flowers with a red spathe and white spadix. Its unique growth habit, low and spreading instead of upright, makes it perfect as a "living carpet" in a terrarium.

- Bright, indirect light, also tolerates lower light levels  
- Normal room temperature 18-25°C
- Regular indoor humidity is sufficient
- Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Plant in a well-draining soil mix, such as our aroid soil.
- Grows very slowly but the leaves live a long time
