Adelonema wallisii - An aroid from Panama and Colombia with unusually hard leaves. Slow growing but extremely hardy and easy to care for.
Adelonema wallisii (also called Homalomena wallisii 'camouflage') is one of the most unique aroids. Instead of growing upwards, it spreads like a wide mat, only 15 cm high but over 50 cm wide.
The unusually hard, oval, palm-sized leaves display a fascinating three-color pattern: almost white spots, a medium green base, and a very dark ground color. New leaves roll up bright and develop their dramatic coloration over several weeks.
Botanical description
Adelonema wallisii comes from the rainforests along the Atlantic coast of Panama and Colombia where it grows on the forest floor. It is often still sold under the old name Homalomena wallisii.

As a member of the aroid family (Araceae), it has characteristic flowers with a red spatha and white spadix. Its unique growth habit, low and spreading rather than upward, makes it perfect as a "living carpet" in the terrarium.
