The hardiest of all palms, the windmill palm
Trachycarpus fortunei is actually one of the few palms that can be grown outdoors in large parts of Sweden. The palm can, with protection of its crown, withstand temperatures down to -17 to -18°C, making it ideal for cultivation in colder climates and in the milder parts of the country. It is very resistant to wind thanks to its robust leaves and can also withstand salty sea winds. In addition, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
Although it can grow up to 20 meters tall in its native range, it is more commonly seen as about 10 meters tall in cultivation. Large, curved clusters of small pale yellow flowers appear in summer, followed by small, kidney-shaped fruits that ripen from yellow to blue-black in autumn. Male and female flowers are on separate plants.
Botanical description
Trachycarpus fortunei originates from China and Japan where it grows in mountain forests and on rocky places. It was introduced to Europe in 1846 and has since been widely planted as an ornamental tree.
The palm is also grown commercially for its fiber, which is used to make ropes and bags, and for its oil, which is used in lubricants and cosmetics.
Care
Perfect for outdoor planting in the milder parts of the country as well as by the pool or on a terrace where it provides a lovely exotic impression. Thrives in sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil.
Water regularly during the growing season but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Drought-tolerant once established. Fertilize monthly during the growing season.
Protect the crown during winter in colder climates, especially young plants. Although the trunk can withstand frost, the growing point is more sensitive. However, the palm should be protected from strong winds as the leaves can easily be damaged.
Repot young plants annually, older specimens less frequently. Can be grown in a large pot or planted outdoors where the climate allows. Buy windmill palm online!
