Easy-to-grow "mini monstera" from Malaysia with lobed leaves, a compact relative of Monstera

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma, also known as Monstera 'Minima' or "mini monstera," is a climbing plant in the Araceae family. With its lobed leaves, it resembles the significantly larger leaves of the Monstera genus, but remains considerably smaller.

Despite its common names, the species is not a Monstera; it belongs to the genus Rhaphidophora and is originally from Malaysia and southern Thailand, where it was scientifically described in 1893. In the rainforest, it grows as a liana up to 5 meters tall on trees.

Rhaphidophora are hemiepiphytic lianas, meaning they start as seedlings on the forest floor and then climb trees using their tendrils. In the process, they change in size and leaf shape. In their juvenile stage, the leaves are small with few or no lobes. Shortly after finding a support to climb and receiving more light due to the increased height, the leaves quickly grow larger and take on their adult form. In R. tetrasperma, however, the leaves remain relatively compact, reaching a maximum length of about 20 centimeters.

A small warning: the species is easy to grow but can become truly lush and almost invasive under good conditions, so feel free to give it a climbing support and keep it in check.

Care

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Water when the soil has dried out slightly. Requires high humidity and well-draining, airy soil, preferably with orchid bark. Provide climbing support such as a moss pole for larger and more lobed leaves. Ideal temperature 18-26 degrees Celsius.

Fertilize monthly during the growing season. Buy Rhaphidophora tetrasperma 'monstera minima' online!
