Large Caribbean Philodendron with Enormous Leaves
Philodendron giganteum is an impressively large-growing philodendron that was scientifically described by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1856. The species is native from the Caribbean to Brazil (Pará) and primarily grows in wet tropical biotopes. It is hemiepiphytic and either terrestrial or epipetric, meaning it can grow on rocks.

As the name suggests, this is a plant with large leaves; the maximum leaf size according to available scientific information is approximately 190 x 96 centimeters. The species is characterized by a bright red spathe and short internodes.
The species occurs in a wide area of the Caribbean, including the islands of Dominica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts, Saint Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Virgin Islands, and extending into northeastern South America.
Botanical Description
The plant is a "self-header" and does not climb, instead forming a rosette of leaves directly from the base.
Philodendron giganteum is often available commercially as it is propagated through tissue culture (cloning). However, it is worth noting that tissue culture can sometimes slightly alter the plant's appearance.
Care
Thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates a fair amount of shade; however, it grows faster in semi-bright filtered light. Keep the soil evenly moist with well-draining soil. Ideal temperature 18-26 degrees Celsius with high humidity.
Fertilize monthly during the growing season. Give the plant ample space for its large leaves. Buy Philodendron giganteum online!
