Rare variety from Oaxaca, Mexico with wider juvenile leaves than Burle Marx's Flame
Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana is a variety of Monstera deliciosa first found in 1961 in the Sierra de Juárez mountain range in Oaxaca, Mexico by George Bunting. The correct name is "Monstera deliciosa var. sierrana", although people often incorrectly shorten it to "Monstera Sierrana".
There is a possibility that this is actually a distinct species (similar to what happened with Monstera tacanaensis), in which case the variety would be separated and given a species name, but this topic is still under review by taxonomists.
Some entertain the possibility that M. deliciosa var. sierrana is a mature form of Monstera 'Burle Marx's Flame' or that 'Burle Marx's Flame' is a unique form of var. sierrana, a so-called "sport". However, when looking at key differences between the plants, such as fenestration and leaf shape (including comparison of juvenile forms), they appear to be distinctly different. Even in their juvenile state, the leaves are noticeably different; young leaves of BM Flame are narrow compared to the wider juvenile leaves of var. sierrana.
Care
Thrives in bright, indirect light. Water when the soil has dried slightly. Requires high humidity and well-drained soil. Provide climbing support such as a moss pole. Ideal temperature 20-26°C.
