Small orchid, perfect for mounting, yellow subtly scented flowers
Maxillaria variabilis is a small, fascinating orchid found from Mexico through Central America to Colombia and Ecuador at altitudes between 500 and 2500 meters. It grows terrestrially, lithophytically on rocks, or epiphytically on or under trees in open or dense humid forests and cloud forests.
The plant has simple or branched rhizomes that bear ovoid pseudobulbs surrounded by several sheaths. Each pseudobulb is about 2 centimeters high and carries a single oblong, grass-green leaf up to 25 centimeters long on its apex. Over time, the long rhizome causes the plant to hang.
Flowering can occur throughout the year, but primarily from winter to spring. The individual inflorescences at the base of the newest shoots produce long-lasting flowers about 2 centimeters in size, in varying colors from pale yellow to intense red, with a wet-looking red or burgundy blotch inside the lip. The variety we sell produces the yellow flowers.
Botanical description
Maxillaria variabilis belongs to the miniature orchids that thrive in humid montane forests and oak forests. It is not particularly complicated to cultivate, which, combined with its ability to flower, makes it especially attractive for orchid beginners.

Care
Thrives in semi-shade to bright locations without direct sunlight. Best grown mounted on cork bark with roots in sphagnum moss, or in a pot with orchid substrate and good drainage. To retain moisture at the roots, tie the plant with a little sphagnum moss.
Optimal temperature 18-25°C during the day, 15-18°C at night. Spray when mounted (daily during the growth phase, otherwise every 2-3 days), but allow the plant to dry thoroughly between sprayings. Water less in winter.
Feel free to use a humidifier or place in a terrarium, as it will thrive even better. Although, of course, it can also thrive without this. Fertilize every one to two weeks with diluted orchid fertilizer during the growing season. Less frequently in autumn, not at all in winter. Buy Maxillaria variabilis online!
