Cool-growing orchid from Machu Picchu with red, rooster-like flowers
Masdevallia veitchiana, also known as Veitch's masdevallia or "king of the masdevallias," is an orchid species that grows wild near Machu Picchu and surrounding areas in Peru at an altitude of 2000-4000 meters. In Peru, it is called gallo-gallo, which means "rooster," after the rooster-like red comb, crest, and skin of its flowers.
This is a cool- to cold-growing, large, terrestrial, sometimes lithophytic or rarely epiphytic species with erect leaves. It grows on steep rocky slopes covered with grass and bushes in full sun, but with the leaves protected by the grass.
Botanical description
The plant was named in honor of Harry Veitch of the Veitch Nurseries family, whose plant hunters discovered it in 1867. He imported, cultivated, and flowered it for the first time. Long considered Peru's national treasure, it is rumored to have been cultivated by the Incas centuries ago, who called the plant waqanki.
Care
Masdevallia veitchiana is an excellent plant for both beginners and experienced growers. It quickly grows into an specimen plant and is spectacular when several flowers bloom together, usually between spring and summer.
Prefers a cool, humid location but, like most orchids, requires plenty of light to bloom consistently. In low light, the flower stalks tend to become weak, causing the flowers to droop.
Prefers daytime temperatures of 15-25°C and tolerates evening temperatures below 5°C.
Water regularly. Fertilize sparingly with orchid fertilizer. Use airy orchid soil with good drainage.
