An orchid with glittering leaf veins
The leaves of the jewel orchid are dark green to almost black at the base, with brightly shining white or gold veins. They are arranged in a spiral around the shoots, and when the plant has grown, it can flower from the middle of the shoot on a stem that grows up to 25 cm high. The flowers are small and brownish-red or white, not very eye-catching, but elegant up close.
After flowering, the shoot that bloomed slowly dies back, but at the same time sends out offshoots that quickly grow further. Over time, the plant forms a dense, carpet-like growth habit.
Botanical description
Macodes petola is a small jewel orchid from Thailand and Malaysia. In nature, it grows in shady places, often directly on damp rocks, a so-called lithophyte. It only grows 5–10 cm tall without a flower stalk, with leaves that rarely exceed 5 cm. The plant is not poisonous to dogs or cats.

Care
Macodes petola thrives best in low, indirect light, direct sun should be avoided completely. The leaf colors are often more beautiful in lower light, but growth is slower.
It needs consistent heat all year round and high humidity, preferably above 70%. It is therefore best suited to a terrarium or grow cabinet.
The substrate should be kept slightly moist but never wet. Avoid getting water in the middle of the leaves – this can lead to rot. Water preferably with soft water.
Transplantation
Plant in a very airy and well-draining substrate, preferably with orchid bark, sphagnum and a little perlite or pumice. In a terrarium it can also grow directly on damp rocks, as long as it never gets too wet. Buy jewel orchid macodes petola online!
