Labisia pumila is a dwarf shrub with beautiful leaf patterns from Southeast Asia.
This species is easy to care for, robust in a terrarium, and grows easily, albeit slowly, as long as temperatures and humidity remain sufficiently high.
The plant thrives in the shade, away from direct sunlight, and grows well in moist or loamy soil. It propagates through its rhizomes, leaves, and/or seeds, and when cultivated, it is harvested approximately one year after planting.
Labisia pumila is popularly known as kacip Fatimah ("Fatima's betel nut cutter") in Malaysia, where it is cultivated as a medicinal plant. The plant has been traditionally used in various medicinal applications. Plant extracts have been commercially formulated for consumption in capsule and tablet form, as well as an ingredient in energy drinks. In Malaysia, Labisia pumila was highlighted in 2010 as one of five local herbs to be developed commercially on a large scale.
Botanical description
Labisia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Primulaceae, native to the Malesian biogeographical region. The plant is indigenous to Malaysia but is also found in Sumatra, Java, and Borneo.

Three varieties of Labisia pumila have been described: var. alata, var. lanceolata, and var. pumila. These differ slightly in leaf shape and size but share the same basic growth habit and requirements.
Care
Labisia pumila always likes it warm and humid, making it an excellent candidate for a terrarium or greenhouse. Place it in a semi-shaded spot and use loose, airy substrate. For example, our peat-free soil.
Keep temperatures and humidity high for optimal growth. The plant thrives in warm, humid conditions that mimic its natural habitat in the rainforests of Southeast Asia.
Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. The plant appreciates consistent moisture but cannot tolerate standing water.
Fertilize with orchid fertilizer approximately every two weeks during the growing season. This provides the plant with the nutrients it needs to develop its beautiful leaf patterns and maintain healthy growth.
