Soil-predatory mites – Effective combatants of pests in the soil
The predatory mite, also known as Hypoaspis , is a very small but effective beneficial animal that lives in and on the soil surface. As an adult, it measures only about 1 mm in length and has a characteristic brown color. Despite its small size, this predatory mite is a versatile pest fighter, as it attacks several different species that have one or more stages of development in the soil. Some examples are midges, water flies, thrips, chicken mites and springtails ( Collembola ).
Life cycle and requirements for survival
The predatory mite remains in the houseplant as long as there are pests to hunt, but dies out quickly if the food disappears for a longer period or if the soil becomes too dry. Therefore, it is important to keep the soil slightly moist to ensure optimal activity and survival.
Instructions for use
For best results, the animals should be placed immediately after delivery where control is desired. Earth predator mites can be used all year round, provided the temperature is above 15°C. They thrive best when the temperature is between 15 and 30°C. Note that they do not survive at temperatures below 12°C.
Summary
Soil predatory mites are an effective, natural method of controlling soil-dwelling pests. They are suitable for both professional growers and home users and can help create a healthier growing environment without chemical pesticides. Buy farm animals online!
