The winding classic with a unique twist
Hoya carnosa 'Compacta', often called 'Hindu Rope', is an unusual cultivar that first appeared as a spontaneous mutation at Hummel's Exotic Gardens in California. It had its breakthrough in the late 1960s when it was launched commercially by a nursery in Florida.
The plant is easily recognized by its rolled, thick leaves and dense growth habit. It winds its way like a green rope and thrives in hanging baskets or climbing along a support. The flowers exude a sweet, honey-like scent and can bloom several times a year under optimal conditions.
Botanical description
Hoya carnosa is the species from which the plant originates. It comes from Southern China to Laos, Japan (S. Kyushu) to Taiwan
Care
Place the waxflower in bright, indirect light. In the winter months, a sunny window counts as this in our climate. Let the soil dry out between waterings. The thick leaves make the plant drought-resistant. Use a well-drained soil mix, preferably with a touch of orchid bark or perlite.
Hoya carnosa 'Compacta' retains its old flower stalks (peduncles), so do not remove them! New flowers may appear from the same spot year after year. Buy Hoya carnosa 'compacta' online!
