Rainforest plant from the Amazon with thick, iridescent leaves in deep purple and blue
Geogenanthus ciliatus belongs to the Commelinaceae family and is one of the most visually remarkable forest floor plants available. It grows on the rainforest floor, often in deep shade under old trees, with a creeping, fleshy rhizome from which the leaves and flowers emerge at regular intervals.

The leaves grow to about 20 centimeters, exceptionally up to 30 centimeters. New leaves emerge rolled up and green, and unfurl over several days to develop their characteristic color and wavy shape. The leaves are strikingly thick and fleshy, and their deep purple to blue color combined with the intense sheen and the rare mutation that creates colored lines on the leaves, makes them very difficult to photograph; they resemble an oil slick. This plant truly needs to be experienced in person!
The underside of the leaves is deep purple and covered with yellowish hairs. The flowers are violet and discreet, lasting only a few days.
The thick, brilliant orange roots are particularly noticeable during repotting. Together with the rhizome, they serve as storage organs for nutrients and water during the short dry season in the plant's natural environment.
Botanical Description
The species is native to the upper Amazon and has been documented from the eastern slopes of the Andes in Ecuador at mid-altitudes through the lowlands of northern Peru. It is typically found on the floor of primary rainforests and is well adapted to low light conditions, which sometimes leads to its cultivation as a houseplant or conservatory plant in temperate climates.
Care
Thrives in shade to partial shade; it does not need much light and direct sun will burn the leaves. Requires high humidity (70-80% or more), making it perfect for terrariums or plant cabinets.
Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy. Use an airy, well-draining mix with a good proportion of organic matter. Ideal temperature 20-28 degrees Celsius.
Fertilize sparingly during the growing season. Avoid watering directly on the leaves, which are susceptible to spotting. Buy Geogenanthus ciliatus variegata online!
