Largest pygmy sundew from Western Australia with scorpion-like shape and long tentacles
Drosera scorpioides belongs to the pygmy sundews and originates from the southern part of Western Australia. It is the largest of the pygmy sundews and has a distinct scorpion-like shape thanks to its elongated, cup-shaped oval leaves and very long tentacles.
This carnivorous plant propagates via vegetative gemmae, small seed-like capsules with tiny hairs that allow them to "explode" and disperse into the air when hit by raindrops. Flowering occurs in summer and produces bright mauve-coloured flowers. In nature, it is found on white sand and clay near swamps and on sandy ridges, and the species can be expected to live up to seven years.
Care
Thrives in a bright position with some direct sun. Use nutrient-poor substrate of peat and sand or perlite. Water only with distilled or rainwater and keep constantly moist, preferably standing in a small amount of water. Requires good air circulation.
Ideal temperature 15-28 degrees Celsius. Many pygmy sundews appreciate cooler winters. Easily propagated through the gemmae that form.
