Hybrid that makes the darthvaderiana species easier to care for!
Begonia darthvaderiana 'Green Spot' is a hardy variety of the difficult-to-grow species Begonia darthvaderiana (named after Darth Vader from Star Wars) from Sarawak, Borneo, and an unknown second species from the Petermannia section, possibly Begonia atricha or Begonia malachosticta.
This hybrid is significantly more robust and easy to grow than the pure species while retaining the eye-catching appearance that has made darthvaderiana a "must-have" among begonia collectors.
The foliage is velvety and almost black with a wider light border around the dark leaves compared to the pure species. The most characteristic feature is the randomly distributed green dots across the leaf surface that gave the hybrid its name. The plant produces surprisingly large, pink flowers.
Botanical description
Begonia darthvaderiana was first described in 2014 and immediately attracted a lot of attention with its unique appearance and striking name (named after the Star Wars villain). However, the pure species proved to be extremely difficult to grow and long-term cultivation still remains the preserve of a few experts.
This quickly led to attempts to make the species more robust through hybridization and selection to make it available to more plant enthusiasts. 'Green Spot' is the result of such selection, although its exact origin is unknown.
The plant is sometimes marketed as B. darthvaderiana 'Green Spots', but this is misleading as it is not the pure species but a hybrid. It belongs to the Petermannia section of the Begonia genus, a group of creeping begonias with velvety leaves.
Care
Begonia darthvaderiana 'Green Spot' is considerably easier to care for than the pure species but still requires a terrarium, it is not suitable as a regular pot plant. In a terrarium, however, it does not require any special attention, and anyone who has previously grown other Petermannia begonias in a terrarium should be able to handle this one without any problems.
Thrives in high humidity (80-95%) with indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight which will burn the delicate leaves. Keep the substrate slightly moist but never wet, good drainage is essential.
Use an airy mix of coconut fiber, perlite and orchid bark. Ideal temperature 18-24°C with good air circulation to prevent fungal problems.
The plant creeps horizontally and benefits from a wide, shallow pot or can be grown directly on moist moss in a terrarium. Propagate by leaf cuttings or division. Buy Begonia darthvaderiana 'Green Spot' online!
