Colorful bromeliad that stays relatively small, thrives in dry, sunny conditions.
Unlike most other bromeliads, this species grows terrestrially (in the ground) in relatively dry savanna areas of eastern Brazil, not as an epiphyte in the rainforest, hence the English name "earth star".
The coarse, thick leaves act as a water reservoir and form a rosette with intense colors that can vary from red, pink to variegated patterns depending on the cultivar. Popular varieties include 'Red Star', 'Rubin Star', 'Pink Starlite' and 'Strawberry Flambee'. The bright colors require a lot of direct light to develop fully, in too low light the leaves often turn green.
After flowering, the mother plant slowly dies back but produces many small side shoots to replace it.
Botanical description
Cryptanthus bivittatus belongs to the Bromeliaceae family and is native to eastern Brazil where it has adapted to the dry conditions of the savannah rather than the rainforest. This makes the species unique among bromeliads and explains its different care requirements.

Unlike classic bromeliads, Cryptanthus does not form a funnel to store water. Instead, its thick, succulent leaves act as water reservoirs, an adaptation to periodic droughts in its natural habitat.
The species is relatively variable in color and pattern, and many cultivars have been developed for decorative qualities with various shades of red, pink, and green.
Care
Cryptanthus bivittatus requires full sun and a relatively dry location to thrive. A lot of direct light is necessary to develop the bright colors, place by a south or west window with sun all day. In winter the leaves often turn green again if not supplemented with a strong grow light.
The species does not form a funnel and does not need to be watered from above. It tolerates drying out better than too much moisture and should be grown in mineral substrate with excellent drainage. Water sparingly and let the substrate dry between waterings.
Use cactus soil or mix regular potting soil with gravel, perlite and sand. Good air circulation is important. Ideal temperature 18-28°C. Fertilize sparingly during the growing season.
After flowering, the mother plant produces side shoots that can be separated when they have reached 1/3 the size of the mother. Propagation is easy through these shoots. Buy Cryptanthus bivittatus online!
