The species is found only on a remote mountain in the Philippines
The ascent of Mount Cleopatra's Needle is described as a "challenging trek for experienced climbers" and takes 3-4 days. The trail leads through countless river crossings, boulders, and one of the most biodiverse forests in the entire Philippines. Begonia cleopatrae was first described as a new species in 2010 and is named after this very mountain. Although the mountain ascent is difficult, this begonia is very easy to care for! Please note that cracks in the leaves during shipping are common.
The leaves are rounded and thick. On top, the leaves are light green with a typical black pattern that always has a line in the middle of the leaf. On the underside, the leaves are pale red. The plant has very long leaf stalks, which are also red. It grows flat against vertical rocks, and the leaves are pressed very tightly against the mountain. When grown in a pot, it develops a compact growth habit.
The flowers of Begonia cleopatrae are beautiful, especially when closed. The flower buds and stems are bright red and turn pink when they open.
Botanical description
Begonia cleopatrae is native to Palawan in the Philippines (the small yellow line on the map). The begonia primarily grows in the humid tropical biome.

Care
Begonia cleopatrae is easy to grow and thrives best in shady conditions and mild temperatures. It grows best in a looser substrate that can sometimes dry out but should not be kept constantly wet. Our peat-free soil is well-suited for this species.
It prefers slightly higher humidity of 50% or more. It should be fertilized sparingly. Our soil mix contains nutrients that last for several months.
Especially during the winter months, it tends to develop brown leaf edges or even drop entire leaves when humidity is low. However, this should not be a cause for concern, as it will start growing again in the spring. Do not throw away the plant as long as the roots are still healthy and firm! This species sometimes takes a winter break and may have few or no leaves during this time. Buy Begonia cleopatrae online!
