Large-growing foliage begonia with striking light pink leaves
The pink variegation occurs naturally; this is not a cultivated hybrid but a natural form!
Unlike most ornamental foliage begonias, this species thrives in bright conditions and can even tolerate some direct sun, making it suitable for brighter spots. It can grow to about 1.5 meters high without support, and in nature, up to 2-3 meters.
The leaves are mostly very light pink with only the veins in green to black. It achieves its best coloration in very bright, warm conditions. The species flowers with red to pink blooms.
Botanical description
Begonia brevirimosa is native to New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago, where it grows on sun-exposed mountain slopes at altitudes up to 1500 meters. It is common in the understory of tropical rainforest habitats.
In nature, the plant loses most of its leaves in winter (during the dry season there). This is a natural part of the plant's life cycle.
Care
Thrives best in loose and airy substrate with some limestone. Does not like to sit in water but should also not dry out; constantly medium-moist substrate is ideal. This is one of the few foliage begonias that prefers bright light and even enjoys direct sun. However, protect it from full midday sun, but only with sufficient light will the leaves become contrastingly pink/black.
Fertilize sparingly, otherwise, it will shoot up quickly and look a bit bare. If the stems grow too tall, they can be pruned without problems. If you can meet the plant's basic needs (some warmth and humidity), it is surprisingly easy to grow.
Ideal temperature 18-26°C. Suitable for large terrariums or windowsills with plenty of space. Buy Begonia brevirimosa online!
