An unusual but very popular banana variety in Asia
Musa acuminata 'Lady Finger' is a banana cultivar that produces incredibly sweet and aromatic bananas. The small, finger-like bananas have a thinner skin and a creamy, intense sweetness that is widely considered superior to regular store-bought bananas. The bananas grow to only 10-12 centimeters long with a slender, curved shape.
The plant itself reaches 2.5-3 meters in height with a slender stem than many other banana varieties. The foliage has an unusual fluorescent green color with a slight yellowish tinge. The compact growth habit makes Musa 'Lady Finger' excellent for growing indoors.
Botanical description
Lady Finger belongs to the AA cultivar group and is a diploid variety of the wild banana Musa acuminata, specifically within the Sucrier subgroup. The variety originated in Malaysia or Indonesia where it has been cultivated since ancient times and is today one of the world's most popular local banana varieties.
The official botanical name is Musa (AA Group) 'Lady Finger', although the name has been used for several distinct clones with different genome combinations. In the Caribbean and tropical America, related varieties are often called 'Frécinette' or 'Niño'.
The AA group, with its high proportion of Musa acuminata genetic material, is known to be more sensitive and demanding than hybrid varieties. Lady Finger is particularly dependent on high humidity and constantly moist roots to survive and flourish.
The flowering produces a compact inflorescence that develops several "hands" of bananas. The bunches are relatively small, usually 5-7 kilos under optimal conditions, rarely more than 10-12 kilos, making the variety unsuitable for commercial large-scale cultivation but perfect for home use!
Care
Musa acuminata 'Lady Finger' thrives in warm, stable tropical or subtropical climates and is popular in coastal and Mediterranean climates. The plant requires full sun, constant warmth and abundant watering for optimal growth and fruit production.
In Sweden, these conditions can almost only be achieved by growing this variety indoors in a sunny location most of the year. During the hottest weeks of summer, the plant can be allowed to stand outdoors during the day, but we still recommend that it be brought inside in the evening. During the darkest months of winter (November-February), additional plant lighting should be provided to encourage growth.
Plant in rich, well-drained soil with generous fertilization to support fruit formation. Water regularly and abundantly during the summer, but reduce watering during the winter. Good drainage is essential, make sure there are holes in the pot!
Under optimal tropical conditions, the plant flowers in 12-18 months. After fruit production, the main stem dies naturally, but new shoots emerge from the root ball.
The bananas are harvested when they are plump and golden yellow. They are eaten fresh or used in desserts and baked goods. Thanks to their superior taste, aroma and nutritional value, Lady Finger is a favorite for home growing, a charming and practical plant that provides both tropical atmosphere and delicious fruits.
