Babaco (Vasconcellea × heilbornii) , often called mountain papaya, is a hardy exotic fruit plant originally from the subtropical regions of Ecuador.
It is closely related to papaya, but has some unique characteristics that make it interesting for cultivation, even in slightly cooler climates. Babaco is known for its unique shape, which resembles an elongated melon, and its fresh, tangy flavor reminiscent of a mix of pineapple, strawberry and citrus. The fruit is seedless, which makes it extra easy to eat and use in cooking.
Care:
Temperature : Babaco is sensitive to frost, although it survives down to -2 degrees, it can be advantageous to protect it from temperatures below 10°C. In winter it should be kept indoors.
Watering : Keep the soil evenly moist but avoid it becoming waterlogged.
Light and Location : Babaco thrives best in bright, indirect light. Place the plant in a greenhouse or sunny window where it receives enough light but is protected from direct sun during the hottest hours of the day.
Botanical description
Origin : Babaco is a natural hybrid between two other species in the Carica genus: Vasconcellea stipulata and Vasconcellea pubescens.
Babaco is a parthenocarpic fruit, which means it develops without fertilization and thus contains no seeds.
Growth and Appearance : The tree can grow up to 2-3 meters in height and has a smooth, green trunk. The leaves are large and lobed, similar to those of the common papaya, but slightly smaller.
