Iconic South African Tree, Slow-Growing and Precious

Aloidendron dichotomum is probably the most famous aloe in South Africa and Namibia. The species was formerly called Aloe dichotoma, but the tree aloes have recently been given their own genus. This is one of the most exotic of all desert trees and stands out in the arid regions of Namibia and South Africa.

This distinctive tree aloe has smooth branches covered in a thin layer of whitish powder that helps to reflect the hot sun's rays. The bark on the trunk forms beautiful golden-brown scales, but beware, the edges of these scales are razor-sharp. The bright yellow flowers appear from June to July.

The species is an extremely hardy tree that can live for over 80 years and reach a height of about 7 meters. The English name "quiver tree" comes from the San people (bushmen) hollowing out the branches to make strong and useful quivers for their arrows.

Botanical description

Aloidendron dichotomum is a prominent feature in the dry areas commonly known as Namaqualand and Bushmanland. It occurs in rocky areas from Nieuwoudtville northwards into Namibia and eastwards to Upington and Kenhardt. Throughout much of its range, the species is in decline, and its slow growth and relative rarity make it a particularly valuable specimen.

Care

In cultivation, it requires extremely well-drained coarse mineral sand, full sun, good air circulation, and very little water, which is given mainly in winter, as it mainly occurs in desert areas with winter rainfall. In the rare event that it receives too little water, the leaves curl up and die back at the tips; this is not fatal but indicates that it is relatively dry.

The species is unusually prone to aphids and insect infestations between the leaves, which is exacerbated when it does not receive full sun and constant fresh air circulation. Indoor plants require frequent treatment against these pests. Buy tree aloe online!
