Alocasia cuprea is known for having a small root system, despite its large and numerous leaves.
The reason is that in its natural environment in Sabah, Borneo, it grows on slopes among rocky woodlands. There, Alocasia cuprea does not need deep roots. Instead, it absorbs water from epikarst (groundwater near the surface) and stores it in its large, thick, leathery leaves.
Care.
Alocasia Cuprea thrives best in indirect light. It prefers high humidity, about 80%, and evenly moist but well-drained soil, we grow ours in our Aroid soil. Avoid exposing the plant to direct sunlight.
Origin
The species is sometimes called Alocasia 'red secret' or copper leaf Alocasia in plant circles. This Alocasia variety is from the tropical island of Borneo. The species is not believed to be endangered.
Appearance.
Leaf.
The young leaves of Alocasia cuprea are round and may have fully or partially fused lower leaf blades. Both the upper and lower surfaces are red, with a deeper red tone on the underside. They are large, heart-shaped and have a glossy, almost metallic surface.
The mature leaves are large, shiny and have a coppery grey hue that resembles armor. In adult plants, the red color disappears from the upper surface and is replaced by a coppery green hue, while the underside retains its red color.
Plant type.
Alocasia cuprea 'Red Secret' grows from a rhizome and forms a compact clump of leaves. The plant is relatively small compared to other alocasias, making it an excellent indoor houseplant. It usually reaches a height of 30-80 cm.
Propagation.
Propagation of Alocasia is usually done by dividing small 'corms' which are small shoots from the root of the plant. Cut off such a shoot at the base, place with the growing point upwards in perlite and water only.
Cover with some clear plastic and place under a grow light or in indirect light. The corm should root within a few weeks and become a new little (often incredibly cute) Alocasia plant. Buy Alocasia cuprea 'red secret' online and enjoy this tropical houseplant at home.

Köpte ett lite ynka blad i somras men lyckades inte överleva det. Nu hoppas jag på att den här större ska trivas hos mig
