Rare Highland Alocasia from Borneo with Brilliant Green Leaves and Raised Reticulate Pattern
Alocasia puncakborneensis is a rare Alocasia from Malaysian Borneo, specifically from Puncak Borneo in the Padawan area near Kuching in Sarawak. The species epithet comes from the type locality plus the suffix -ensis meaning "from" - "puncak", which means mountain peak in Malay.
What makes this species unique and distinct from all other described species in the Alocasia princeps complex are the brilliant green leaves with veins that form a prominent raised fine reticulate pattern on the upper surface of the leaf. This gives the leaves an incredibly beautiful, textured surface.
Alocasia puncakborneensis grows at a higher altitude than any other locally restricted species in the Princeps complex. It is found in the higher parts of the Penrissen mountain range, never below 800 meters and up to approximately 1300 meters altitude. There it grows terrestrially or lithophytically on steep shady slopes or on moist boulders in humid forest. This makes it a highland species that appreciates slightly cooler and more humid conditions.
