Extremely rare "little queen" with velvety black leaves, silver veins, and pink variegation

Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegata is an extremely rare alocasia with beautiful splashes of pink and white variegation. The pink variegation becomes more intense over time.

Contrary to popular belief, 'Black Velvet' is not a hybrid; it is Alocasia reginula, a distinct species indigenous to a very specific environment: the shady limestone cliffs and rocky slopes of Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

The species name reginula means "little queen," which the plant truly deserves. Wild populations were definitively located and documented only in 2021, meaning the species had been commercially cultivated for decades before botanists confirmed where it actually grew.

The cultivar entered commercial trade in the early 1990s when Scott Hyndman introduced it simply as Alocasia 'Black Velvet,' having received a single plant from the Lyon Arboretum in Hawaii, which in turn had received it from a Japanese collector who reportedly brought it home from Borneo. That single plant was tissue cultured and became the foundation of practically every 'Black Velvet' in cultivation today.

What makes 'Black Velvet' immediately recognizable is the leaf surface: a deep, dark green that reads as almost black, with a matte, velvety texture unlike the glossy finish most alocasias have. Bold silver-white veins cut across the surface, reflecting almost the entire visible light spectrum while the surrounding leaf absorbs almost everything. This is the physical mechanism behind the high-contrast, almost graphic appearance. The pink variegated form adds irregular sectors of soft pink and pale cream, making an already striking leaf significantly rarer.

Note that the pink variegation can vary from leaf to leaf and is not guaranteed to be consistent, as stable pink variegation in A. reginula is genuinely uncommon.

Care

Thrives in bright, indirect light to maintain variegation; avoid direct sun. Water when the soil has slightly dried out and avoid overwatering, which easily causes root rot. Requires high humidity (60-70%) and well-draining, airy soil.
