Medium-sized tropical fern, a favorite for terrariums
This species has triangular leaves and characteristic thin, thread-like, black petioles. The plant reaches 40-50 centimeters in both height and width, with individual leaves that can be up to 30 centimeters long and 15 centimeters wide.
Adiantum raddianum is considerably more demanding than many other ferns. It tolerates neither drought nor low humidity. This makes it perfect for terrariums where humidity can be carefully controlled.
Botanical description
Adiantum raddianum is native to South and Central America but has now spread as an invasive species to tropical Africa and Asia. In its natural habitat it grows on the forest floor, in rock crevices, along riverbeds, coastal cliffs and along paths and streams, always in moist, shady environments.

The plant occurs both terrestrially, on damp rocks, and epiphytically on mossy tree trunks.
The plant spreads through spores that form on the undersides of the leaves, but is most often propagated by division when transplanting.
Care
Adiantum raddianum requires constant high humidity and indirect light to thrive. Place the plant where it will receive as much humidity and soft, filtered light as possible. Direct sunlight will burn the delicate leaves immediately.
The soil or mounting material must be kept slightly moist at all times, drying out is fatal to this species. If the substrate dries out, the leaflets die immediately and rarely recover.
Fertilize with a reduced concentration, about 1/2 to 1/4 of the manufacturer's recommended dose, about every two weeks during the growing season.
Be extra careful when replanting as the species is sensitive to root disturbance. Handle gently and avoid shaking soil off the roots. Choose a well-drained but moisture-retaining substrate, preferably with a mixture of moss or coconut soil, perlite and fine bark, such as our peat-free soil.
In regular rooms, the plant can be placed on a humidity mat or next to a humidifier. Low humidity below 60% leads to brown leaf tips and leaf drop.
The ideal temperature is 18-24°C. The plant does not tolerate cold or frost and should be kept indoors all year round in temperate climates. Avoid placing near radiators or drafty windows. Buy maidenhair fern online!
