A relatively new hybrid with colorful large leaves and prominent veins
Philodendron 'Summer Glory' is a remarkable hybrid that combines the best traits of an unnamed Philodendron hybrid and Philodendron gloriosum . Developed by LariAnn Garner in 2016, this variety is known for its dramatic leaf transformation, with new leaves emerging in a fiery red-orange hue before maturing to a deep green with a velvety texture.
The striking purplish-pink veins are especially prominent on younger leaves and fade with age.
Botanical description
Philodendron 'Summer Glory' is the product of a controlled cross made in August 2016 between an unnamed hybrid Philodendron as the female parent and a Philodendron gloriosum as the male parent. The plant was selected based on its distinctive coloration, durability and relative freedom from pests.
This hybrid takes influence from Philodendron gloriosum and inherits its creeping growth habit and broad, heart-shaped leaves. Unlike P. gloriosum which has darker leaves, 'Summer Glory' has young leaves of a reddish bronze colour that fades to a dark, glossy green.
Care
Philodendron 'Summer Glory' prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can cause brown leaves, while low light slows growth. Place near a window with filtered light for best results, or use grow lights further into a room.
Keep the soil evenly moist but not wet. Let the top layer dry slightly between waterings. Make sure the pot has good drainage to avoid overwatering which often causes yellow leaves. Water with balanced liquid potting soil in 1/2-1/4 dose each watering.
Thrives in temperatures between 18°C and 26°C. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, such as near windows. The plant can tolerate near freezing (0-2°C) for short periods but thrives best in warm conditions.
As it is a creeping plant it benefits from a wide/oblong pot rather than a deep one. This allows the plant to spread horizontally as it does naturally. Can grow up to 90 centimetres wide with large leaves spanning 30-40 centimetres.
Best grown in a well-drained mixture containing orchid bark and perlite, e.g. our aroid mixture .
Repot every 2-3 years to maintain healthy root development. Gently wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and improve photosynthesis. Buy Philodendron Summer Glory online!
