The leaves are lifted upwards during the night, as if the plant is "praying" in the dark.
Botanical Description
The name of Calathea makoyana is actually ' Goeppertia makoyana '. The species comes from Brazil in the Espiritu Santo region.
Appearance.
When light shines through the leaves from behind, the pattern is highlighted. This sophisticated camouflage protects the plant from herbivores, especially butterfly larvae. Female butterflies mistake the complex pattern for a completely different plant and choose not to lay their eggs on it.
Care.
Calathea makoyana thrives best in a shady to semi-shady environment with high humidity. The plant prefers well-drained soil and regular watering to keep the soil slightly moist but not wet. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the delicate leaves.
