The pattern of the leaves mimics a small plant!
Calathea lancifolia , now Goeppertia insignis according to modern systematics, is a large-growing and easy-to-grow calathea from the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro. With its elongated, upright leaves reaching 50 centimeters in length but only 8-12 centimeters in width, this is an absolute eye-catcher that stands out from most other calathea species.
The plant reaches about 80 centimeters in height, while the wavy leaf edges and crimson undersides add further dimension to its beauty. The pattern on the leaves is intended to represent a smaller plant and hide the true size of the leaf from the eyes of leaf-eating insects, butterflies preferring to lay eggs on large plants where there is plenty of food for the larvae, rather than on small, thin branches.
Botanical description.
Goeppertia insignis grows in the shady undergrowth of rainforests at altitudes of 150-1200 meters in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. It belongs to the larger members of the genus Calathea (now renamed Goeppertia according to recent taxonomy).
The elongated, undulated (wavy) leaves with their characteristic patterns and red undersides make it one of the most beautiful representatives of its genus. Unlike many other calathea species, insignis is relatively undemanding in indoor cultivation, making it accessible to more plant lovers.
Care
Goeppertia insignis thrives in bright, indirect light without direct sun which will fade the pattern and burn the leaves. Place near a window with filtered light.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not wet. Water when the top layer has dried slightly. Good drainage is essential to avoid root rot.
Prefers high humidity (60-70%) but is more tolerant than many other Calathea species. Place on a humidity tray or use a humidifier for best results. Ideal temperature 18-24°C, avoid temperatures below 15°C.
Use well-drained soil rich in organic matter, preferably mixed with perlite, like our peat-free soil. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted fertilizer.
Remove wilted or damaged leaves regularly. Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to keep them dust-free and reduce the risk of pests such as spider mites. Propagate by division when replanting. Buy Calathea insignia online!
