Miniature tree fern that is relatively easy to care for
Blechnum gibbum is a relatively small tree fern, reaching only up to 1 meter in height, which makes it well-suited for indoor cultivation. Unlike true tree ferns such as Cyathea or Dicksonia, this species belongs to Blechnaceae and has developed its tree-like growth habit through convergent evolution. Over time, a scaly trunk (actually a rhizome) forms with a tuft of bright green fronds at the top.
The species originates from the islands of New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Fiji in Oceania, which is why it is also known as Oceaniopteris gibba according to newer systematics.
Care
Keep the soil always slightly moist and place in a spot with the highest possible humidity and bright, indirect light. Tolerates morning or evening sun at most. Bathrooms are often suitable locations. Spray regularly with distilled water to increase humidity.
Requires acidic soil and a partially shaded location. Does not tolerate temperatures below 15°C and must be grown indoors year-round in temperate zones. Suitable for greenhouses or conservatories.
