The Cavendish banana 'Robusta' is a cultivar that can grow up to 4 m tall.
If you're looking for a banana plant that truly lives up to its name, 'Robusta' is an excellent choice. This vigorous Cavendish variety has become one of the world's most widely grown export bananas thanks to its strength, resilience and ability to produce sweet, delicious fruit even in challenging conditions.
'Robusta' is a Cavendish variety that was developed from the original Cavendish group and is also known as 'Poyo' in some places. It belongs to the AAA group of bananas, meaning it is a triploid (has three sets of chromosomes) and produces seedless fruits.
This cultivar has largely replaced older varieties such as 'Lacatan' in Jamaica and the Windward Islands and the legendary 'Gros Michel' in Central America. The reason? 'Robusta' is simply better suited for commercial cultivation.
Unlike many other banana cultivars that can grow very tall, 'Robusta' stays at a more manageable height, usually around 2.5 to 4 meters, making it easier to grow both commercially and at home.
The pseudostem (the false stem made of folded leaf bases) is much thicker and stronger than that of many other varieties. The sturdy stem and lower height make 'Robusta' much more resistant to wind damage compared to taller, narrower varieties. This was a crucial factor in its success in storm-prone tropical regions.
Resistant to Panama disease: One of the biggest advantages of 'Robusta' is its resistance to Panama disease, the devastating fungal disease that nearly wiped out the 'Gros Michel' banana in the 20th century.
The bananas
The fruits of the 'Robusta' banana tree have several characteristics that make them particularly appreciated:
The fruits are slightly shorter and more compact than many other Cavendish varieties, but still of a good size.
Bananas have a intense sweetness and creamy texture when ripe. Like all Cavendish bananas, they ripen from green to a beautiful yellow color. The plant produces generous fruit clusters with many hands (groups of bananas).
Care
Light and Placement
Like all banana plants, 'Robusta' requires a lot of light, at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day, a sunny south-facing window is sufficient all year round. If you do not have enough hours of sunlight at home, we recommend purchasing additional plant lighting.
The banana tree thrives outdoors during the warmest months, especially in southern Sweden. Just make sure the plant is protected from wind.
Temperature
It thrives best between 20-30°C, which usually means 'normal indoor temperature'. The tree can withstand temperatures down to 10 degrees but then grows very slowly. It already starts to be noticeable at temperatures below 18 degrees but the plant survives.
Water
Bananas need plenty of water, so water them abundantly during the hot season. The soil should be evenly moist at all times. The roots cannot stand standing in water and during the winter the soil should be allowed to be slightly drier than during the summer. A large pot is necessary to get a large banana tree. Repotting is often required several times a year under good conditions. The plant does not need high humidity, but the one we have at home is often suitable.
Fertilization
We fertilize with every watering and recommend you do this. The nutrients you use should be high in nitrogen during growth, but potassium becomes important as the plant approaches fruiting. Organic fertilizers such as compost or worm castings are highly appreciated and should be used as a supplement.
Soil
Nutrient-rich, well-drained soil is key, pH 5.5-7.0 is optimal. Feel free to mix in compost, manure and perlite. We use our peat-free soil mix for all banana plants, the soil is quite airy which reduces the risk of root rot while keeping the roots moist.
At Ferns, we appreciate plants that are both beautiful and practical. 'Robusta' is definitely both. If you manage to get it to flower and produce bananas, then you really have something to be proud of! Buy 'robusta' banana plant online!
