Compact cultivar with almost black, velvety leaves and white veins
This small cultivar has become synonymous with the species 'reginula' itself. The leaves are heart-shaped and display a rich, dark violet to black color with a velvety texture that gives the plant its name.
The white veins stand out clearly against the dark background. The plant remains compact and rarely reaches more than 30-40 centimeters in height, making it perfect for small spaces and terrariums.
Botanical description
Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' has a rather fascinating history. The cultivar was introduced to the market in 1992 by Scott Hyndman who obtained the plant from the Lyon Arboretum in Hawaii, who in turn had received it from a collector in Japan. Hyndman theorizes that a Japanese orchid specialist may have discovered it in Borneo while searching for orchids and collected a single specimen, or only managed to grow one individual.

This single specimen was put into tissue culture at Agristarts and became the cultivar we grow today as Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet'. The cultivar has since become so dominant that it has become practically synonymous with the species itself.
In recent years, a mutated variety has appeared on the market under the names Alocasia reginula 'Black Ninja' , Alocasia 'Black Ninja' or Alocasia 'Black Velvet Ninja'. There is no consensus on whether this should be considered a separate cultivar, as reports suggest that it becomes indistinguishable from 'Black Velvet' once mature.
The plant belongs to the Araceae family and is originally native to Borneo where it grows on shady forest floors.
Care
Plant in a well-drained substrate like our aroid soil and keep the plant lightly rooted, too large pots often lead to problems. Water generously but let the soil dry between waterings. Overwatering is the most common mistake and leads to root rot.
Place in a bright place without direct sunlight which can burn the delicate leaves. Prefers high humidity (60-80%) but adapts to normal indoor conditions. Ideal temperature is 18-24°C.
Fertilize monthly during the growing season with diluted fertilizer. Buy Alocasia black velvet online!
