Oxalis care

Oxalis and our favorite red oxalis, 'triangeloxalis', are easy-care houseplants with unique leaves, tubers and small flowers. Perfect for indoor cultivation and tolerates sun!

Oxalis, an easy-care and unique plant

Oxalis is a fascinating genus of flowering plants that includes over 550 species. These small, long-stemmed plants are known for their unique leaf shapes, often resembling clovers or butterfly wings. The leaves can have three to five lobes and have a peculiar habit – they open during the day and close at night, giving the plant an almost living appearance.

Red-leaved Clover in a Pot is one of the most popular varieties of Oxalis. Red Oxalis, also known as Oxalis triangularis , is commonly found as an indoor houseplant. This variety has deep purple leaves and small white flowers.

Variants and colors

Oxalis comes in a variety of colors and shapes. Some have solid green leaves, while others, like the triangular oxalis, offer spectacular patterns in purple and red. There are also species with variegated leaves and small flowers in shades of white, yellow, pink, red and purple. The green oxalis, which is hardy and easy to care for, is perfect for those who want a unique and decorative plant both indoors and in the garden.

Cultivation and care advice

Investment

Oxalis thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny location. They thrive very well in bright light but can tolerate a little more shade. They are hardy plants that can be grown indoors and in warmer outdoor climates. In areas with cold winters, such as the Nordic countries, oxalis is most often grown as a houseplant indoors.

Watering

Oxalis requires moderate watering. The soil should be allowed to dry out between waterings, as the plant is sensitive to overwatering. During the dormant period, which often occurs during winter, watering should be further reduced to avoid rotting of the root tubers.

Soil

Oxalis prefers well-drained and slightly acidic soil. For indoor cultivation, our peat-free potting soil or a mixture of regular potting soil and sand or gravel works great.

Flowering and dormancy period

Most oxalis bloom during the summer, but some species, such as Oxalis articulata , can bloom for longer periods. After flowering, the plant often enters a dormant period, when the leaves wither. During this time, the tubers need less water and nutrition.

Propagation and transplanting

Oxalis is easy to propagate from its tubers, which quickly multiply and form new plants. To replant or divide an oxalis, carefully dig up the root tubers and replant them in well-drained, peat-free soil. Cuttings of Triangeloxalis are also a popular method of propagating this hardy and easy-care plant.

Oxalis as food and medicine

Some species of oxalis are actually edible and are used in small quantities as a flavoring, thanks to their sour taste that comes from oxalates. However, caution should be exercised, as the plant can be toxic in larger quantities, especially to domestic animals such as cats, dogs, and horses.

Can oxalis be overwintered?

During the winter, oxalis, especially those grown outdoors, may need extra care. The sensitivity of the tubers to cold makes it important to dig them up and store them in a cool, dry place, such as a basement. Indoor plants can be overwintered by letting them go dormant in a dark place with minimal watering.

Common problems and solutions

  • The leaves are falling: If the leaves start to droop, it may be due to overwatering, lack of light, or the plant entering its dormant period.
  • Invasive growth: Some species, such as Getoxalis ( Oxalis pes-caprae ), spread rapidly via their tubers and can become invasive in gardens. Always check if the species is suitable for growing in your region.
  • Pests and diseases: Oxalis can be affected by spider mites, thrips and powdery mildew. Treat with beneficial insect preventatives or soapy water if necessary.

Summary

Oxalis is a versatile plant that is suitable as both an easy-care indoor plant and a colorful addition to the garden. With its unique leaves, small flowers and hardy nature, it is a perfect choice for beginners and experts who want something a little different in their collection.
