In the dense, humid rainforests of the Philippines, where the sun only weakly filters through the thick foliage, Alocasia heterophylla grows.
This variety of Alocasia originates from the Philippines where it grows along the coast . Often on slopes with relatively high levels of lime in the soil. The humidity is around 60-70%, so the plant is not bothered by our usual indoor humidity which is often similar.
Botanical Description
This Alocasia species has a very variable appearance of the leaves and was named 'Heterophylla' which in Greek means 'different leaves'. There is almost a unique variety of Alocasia heterophylla on every island around the habitat.
On the market you can also find a similar Alocasia under a similar name with the pseudonym Heterophylla 'Corazon' . This variety was thought to be a subspecies of Alocasia heterophylla but much suggests that it is actually a different Alocasia species. You can read more in this fantastic article.
The variety we sell here is the so-called 'Dragon's breath'.
Origin:
Alocasia heterophylla 'dragons breath' is probably from the Philippines , endemic to the island of 'Luzon'. The species is believed to be endangered in the wild.

Appearance.
The leaves of Alocasia heterophylla are large , arrow-shaped and have a beautiful mix of green shades, often with a subtle metallic sheen. The leaf surface is smooth with an elegant and discreet veining. The leaves can grow to impressive sizes. Care:
Alocasia heterophylla thrives in a well-draining soil mixture with plenty of coconut soil and fertilizer, such as our Aroid soil. Alocasia heterophylla thrives best in bright, indirect light but can also be shaded. However, it will not grow very quickly.
