Artocarpus heterophyllus, is a tropical fruit tree and bears the world's largest tree fruits!
Anyone who has ever seen a 50 kg jackfruit hanging from a tree in the tropics will hardly forget it. The plant originates from India and Bangladesh and jackfruit is now widespread in many tropical regions.
The plant can be grown indoors in Sweden in a pot but can also be displayed in the summer. In addition to its spectacular fruit production, the jackfruit tree is also a beautiful houseplant. With regular pruning, it can be kept small and fits nicely in the home.
The fruits are enormous and also taste fantastic. Due to their weight, the fruits must form directly on the tree's trunk, a phenomenon called cauliflory. It is the same principle as in the cocoa tree.
Botanical description.
Artocarpus heterophyllus is a species from India and Bangladesh. Jackfruit trees are self-fertile.
Appearance.
The leaves of the tropical tree are large, glossy and dark green. The fruit itself, the 'Jackfruit', has a rough, spiny surface and can grow up to 90 cm long and 50 cm wide. The flesh is yellow and sweet, with a taste reminiscent of a mixture of banana, pineapple and mango. Another thing not to forget is the sticky, milky-white juice that is practically impossible to wash off and can ooze out from both the leaves and branches.
Care.
Jackfruit trees thrive best in full sunlight. It needs at least 6-8 hours of direct sun each day so a grow light is recommended. Keep the soil evenly moist. Thrives in warm climates with temperatures between 25-35°C. The plant is frost sensitive and can withstand temperatures down to a maximum of 0°C.
Jackfruit has been cultivated in India for over 3000 years and has an important role in many cultural and religious traditions. Buy a Jackfruit tree online!
